NPI registry directories are available in downloadable NPI data files so you can look up and search providers and organizations.
An NPI data file is just an NPI list containing all NPI data for the whole nation. NPI data files are released monthly and include UPIN crosswalks. This website always has the most current file, which replaces any prior.
The NPI is a unique identification number for covered health care providers. Covered health care providers and all health plans and health care clearinghouses must use the NPIs in the administrative and financial transactions adopted under HIPAA. The NPI must be used in lieu of legacy provider identifiers.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), covered providers must also share their NPI with other providers, health plans, clearinghouses, and any entity that may need it for billing purposes.
The individual provider file contains an NPI list of names, credentials, specialty, practice state license, mailing and practice addresses, practice phone and fax, and dates for NPI activation, deactivation, and reactivation.
The organizations file contains an NPI listing of organization names, mailing and practice addresses, practice phone and fax, contact individual, and dates for NPI activation, deactivation, and reactivation.
Do not purchase NPI data files unless you understand how to download ZIP files from the Internet and can manage the data using spreadsheet or database programs.
All downloadable sales are non-refundable so please contact us if you have any questions prior to purchasing.
